Growing plants

One of Communitree's unique programmes is the Home Nursery Programme. Home nurseries are small-scale plant nurseries that can be set up at home. On the patio, in the window sill, in the garden... all you need is a little corner where you can place some containers and you can have a home nursery!

The home nurseries power our gardens! Instead of buying plants at commercial nurseries, we rely on volunteers to grow plants for greening of our public gardens. Communitree provides training, seeds, and cuttings so that anybody can start their own nursery.

We run training sessions throughout the year. Some sessions are scheduled and take place at our office, whereas we also host trainings for specific projects and corridors that take place on-site in the community around those sites. To get started with your home nursery, follow these steps:

  1. Start collecting some containers! These could be ice cream tubs, yoghurt containers, or regular plant containers.
  2. Review our projects and corridors to see if there is a particular area / species / project that you would like to grow plants for.
  3. View the training calendar to see if we have any upcoming events. If not, please sign up for our mailing list so that you will be notified when the next event takes place.
  4. After you have received training, you will receive cuttings and/or seeds to grow at home! Take them home and take care of them as per the instructions.
  5. After 3-12 months (depending on the chosen species and your own preferences) you notify us when the plants are ready and we will coordinate with you to ensure the plants go either to the next volunteer or they are planted out in the gardens!
