From 2016 until 2022, Communitree trained, empowered and connected citizens and partner organisations with the goal of building a stepping-stone network of restoration gardens in Cape Town. We have done this work with great pleasure and have been inspired by the many fellow citizens that are passionate about restoring fynbos and activating public spaces. However, it is time for us to move on to new adventures.
Communitree's activities will continue in two different shapes. Firstly, a new organisation is being set up with a long-term partner, u-Turn, which will focus on providing an indigenous nursery and involving the homeless in training and upliftment through gardening. Please keep your eyes out for Living Roots, where you can now purchase locally indigenous plants from their new nursery in Claremont. We thank Julia September for taking this project forward and in a great new direction. Secondly, our garden network will be embedded in a city-wide umbrella project that we co-founded, called the Fynbos Corridor Collaboration. This project will continue to provide online tools for strategic, indigenous gardening, and it will bring together multiple partner organisations and citizen-led initiatives that can connect through a single platform. We thank our partner co-founders for continuing these efforts.
Lastly, we would like to thank all the gardeners, all the citizens that are so enthusiastically and energetically continuing to plant, weed, design, and care for public spaces - keep up the great work, and we look forward to seeing the gardens continue to grow and evolve!
