Marcela's Birthday Planting Festival (cancelled due to COVID-19 lockdown)

Saturday Apr 04, 2020 | 09:00-12:00

Status: Cancelled

Marcela is turning 40 and she wants to do this with her friends in style! We will be joining the Bridges for Music Academy in Langa in their environmental journey by adding a number of indigenous plants to beautify their garden. On the 4th of April, Marcela's friends are invited to join this planting event and help create an indigenous garden. The Bridges for Music Academy has just started to collaborate with Communitree, and this garden is currently in the first phases of being converted into an ecological corridor stepping stone, offering much-needed support to local insects and birds, and making beautiful learning spaces for the students at the academy.

Marcela Guerrero Casas is one of the founders of Open Streets Cape Town. After many years in Cape Town, she recently moved back to Colombia. In April, Marcela will be in Cape Town once again and she has invited her friends to purchase indigenous plants as her present, and which will be provided by and planted under supervision of the Communitree team. This way, Marcela's birthday will contribute to the ecological corridor building, linking Newlands to Bonteheuwel - Langa being a key stepping stone along the way.

Communitree would like to thank Marcela for celebrating her birthday with us. Together with Bridges for Music Academy director Siviwe, Communitree will work on maintaining and expanding the indigenous garden network throughout Langa, to ensure that the impact of the birthday planting event sustains and spreads into the community life of Langa.

The plants will help with initial soil restoration and already within a few months these species will support a number of indigenous insect and bird species. These plants are grown by and will be delivered on the 4th by Communitree.

About Gardening activities

During gardening events, we go out to a public greening site and work on general maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep of the plot. These events are key in our activities and they have a huge public impact. By keeping (often formerly abandoned) plots in good shape, the public space often transforms from an eyesore and underused space to an inviting space.

During the gardening events we often work on chores like cutting back or removing grass, cleaning up the space (littering is often an issue), removing weeds, taking care of the plants, and improving the soil. You do not need any gardening experience to join these events. The only thing that really matters is your enthusiasm to participate in public gardening! But if you do have some equipment, always feel free to bring this along. Especially useful are:

- Spades
- Cutters
- Garbage bags
- Gloves
